Letter D Dinosaur Activity and Craft

Fossils!

Poured plaster into a small bread pan and had the kids press 4 small plastic dinosaurs into them. Let them set for 1 minute and pulled out. After 24 hours the plaster was set completely. I turned out and covered them with a watered down gold and black paint mixture then wiped clean with a paper towel. Their fossils turned out great!

Paleontologists:

Our next day of class I wanted to do a fossil dig in the sand box but it was raining, grr! So I improvised and filled a container with sugar and we took turns uncovering our fossils. We talked about how a paleontologist has to be very careful and use a soft brush and air to remove dirt. After they dug up their fossils they had little stations to dust them off and clean them up. Once everyone was done cleaning their fossils we inspected them with magnifying glasses.

Volcano:

To end our lesson we talked about how a theory about dinosaur extinction is that volcano's erupted and incased the dinosaur bones in lava rock, and that's why we can learn about them through fossils. I filled a cake pan with sand and plants with a funnel volcano in the middle. The kids placed dinosaurs around it. This was a HUGE success!
